Architectural Services in Ferndown

Bungalow transformations, extensions and new homes on Ferndown's wooded plots, between our two studios.

Ferndown lies between our studios in Canford Cliffs and Ringwood. Its avenues are lined with bungalows and mid-century houses on spacious, tree-lined plots, many of them ready for a second life. LUSO Architecture designs extensions, remodelling and new homes here and in West Parley, West Moors and the villages towards Wimborne.

On New Road we reimagined an existing bungalow as a contemporary five-bedroom home: a reconfigured, open-plan interior, generous openings to the rear and a restrained palette of materials that sits comfortably among the trees. Planning in Ferndown is decided by Dorset Council, and the protected heathland around the town shapes what can be built, particularly for new homes.

Ferndown: common questions

Which council decides planning applications in Ferndown?
Dorset Council. Ferndown was part of the former East Dorset district, and its adopted local plan still applies while Dorset Council prepares a new one.
Does the heathland around Ferndown affect what I can build?
For new homes, yes. Dorset Council generally does not permit a net gain in dwellings within 400 metres of protected heathland, and asks for mitigation between 400 metres and 5 kilometres. Extensions and replacement homes that add no dwelling are generally unaffected. Our guide to planning permission in Dorset sets this out with its sources.
Can a Ferndown bungalow be turned into a larger family home?
Often, yes. Our New Road project turned an existing bungalow into a contemporary five-bedroom home through extension and remodelling. What a given plot will take depends on its neighbours, its trees and Dorset Council's policies.
Do you cover Wimborne, West Moors and West Parley?
Yes. They are all within easy reach of our Canford Cliffs and Ringwood studios.
