Mount Pleasant Lane, Lymington
This project reimagines a traditional cottage set within the tranquil landscape of the New Forest, transforming the existing dwelling into a refined contemporary countryside retreat while remaining deeply connected to its rural setting. The design carefully balances modern interventions with the character of the original home, creating a calm and understated architectural language that sits comfortably within the surrounding greenery.
The architectural approach introduces a series of carefully considered contemporary elements that enhance both the appearance and functionality of the property. Vertical cedar cladding wraps portions of the exterior, allowing the building to blend naturally with the wooded landscape, while crisp white render provides contrast and clarity to the composition. Together, these materials create a timeless palette that feels both modern and rooted in its environment. Large glazed openings and garden-facing living spaces strengthen the relationship between the interior and the landscape, drawing natural light deep into the home while framing views across the gardens and surrounding trees. The layout has been designed to encourage a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living, with terraces and seating areas extending the usable living space into the landscape.
Landscaping formed a central part of the project vision, transforming the grounds into a peaceful and immersive garden setting. A striking outdoor swimming pool creates a focal point within the scheme, accompanied by carefully curated planting, natural stone pathways, and generous lawn areas that soften the architecture and enhance the sense of retreat. The surrounding greenery establishes privacy and tranquillity, reinforcing the cottage’s relationship with the wider New Forest landscape. Internally and externally, the project delivers a calm and cohesive living environment that combines contemporary rural living with a sensitive response to its countryside context, resulting in a carefully integrated home that enhances the character of the site while offering a refined and relaxing retreat immersed in nature.
